2005 Printz Honor Book
The American Library Association (ALA) awards the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished children's book published in the United States during the previous year. Additional works of exceptional quality may be designated Honor Books. The Printz Award recognizes excellence in young adult literature and is administered by the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the ALA, and sponsored by Booklist magazine.
2005 Coretta Scott King Award
The Coretta Scott King Award honors African-American authors of outstanding books for children and young adults. This book is Ms. Morrison's first historical work for young people.
The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award is given annually by the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished informational children's book published the previous year. Russell Freedman has also been awarded the 2005 May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture Award. Each year, an individual of distinction is chosen to write and deliver a lecture that will make a significant contribution to the world of children's literature.

The Caldecott Medal and Honor Awards are presented annually by the American Library Association to the illustrators of the most distinguished picture books for children published in the United States during the preceding year.
